4 Signs Your Swimming Pool Needs Repair (And How Much It Will Cost)

In-ground swimming pool installation.

Every swimming pool, no matter how high-quality, will require maintenance and the odd repair from time to time. You can follow all the rules, but the truth is that things wear out over time. Some types of damage are best repaired early, to prevent replacement costs.

As far as cost goes, we’ve provided a range for each repair type below, but know that details, like your geographical location, type of pool, and intensity of the repairs needed, can all affect the price you’ll pay for the work.

The price ranges and repair vs. replacement costs are based on national averages, but be sure to contact a reliable pool company to provide you with quotes based on your specific needs.

Pay attention to the following signs that indicate you’ll need to hire professional repair techs to come in and help you.

1. Cracked Concrete or Fiberglass, Peeling Plaster, or Torn Vinyl - Repair and Patch

($300 - $2200)

Gunite and concrete pool repairs are typically charged by the linear foot for small cracks. Larger, spiderweb cracks, divots, and bulges in concrete liners need immediate attention, and you’ll need to get these mended and painted immediately.

Avoiding repairs can cause water to leak into the surrounding soil. This won’t just hike up your water costs, but it can also weaken and erode the supporting ground around your pool.

The same goes for fiberglass leaks, averaging around $350 for the gel coat to restore the surface, and up to $800 to repaint after the repairs.

For above-ground pool wall and frame repairs, you can expect to spend anywhere from $1300 to $1700 for the replacement walls, $15-$30 per metal frame part, and an average of $160 for the lock bead.

2. Very Cold Water - Repair the Heater

($165 - $750)

While we all love jumping into a nice, cool swimming pool during a hot day, no one wants to jump in for an ice bath. If the water in the pool is very cold - abnormally cold - it’s highly likely that your pool heater is failing.

It could be blocked pipes reducing water flow to the heater, or malfunctioning controls. One small problem can grow and exacerbate another, however, so the damage must be minimized.

Since replacement heaters can cost an average of $2,700, it’s well worth it to pay for repair and maintenance services in advance instead.

3. Broken Lights

($65 - $150)

If your pool lights break, you’re looking at electricity and water coming together in a dangerous combination.

While it’s tempting to DIY it, you should leave this kind of repair to professionals who will use their training and experience to repair the light safely. Handle these repairs quickly, too, or you could find yourself paying $600 or more to replace just one pool light.

4. Unclean Water: Pipework, Block Sand Filter, or Pool Pump

($500 - $3,500)

Even with proper chemical treatments, your water may still appear dirty or cloudy. This can mean that you have a problem with your pipework and diminished water flow.

A blocked sand filter will always result in cloudy, unclean water. Remember to change it every three to five years, or you’ll need a specialist. Replacing the sand costs about $12 per bag.

Replacing the entire system can cost a whole lot more ($150 - $500+).

And finally, make sure to regularly check your pool pump. If you’re noticing unfamiliar sounds, random periodic shutdowns, or a failure to kick on at all, your pump is in trouble. Since the pump affects every aspect of pool function, when it fails, water can’t circulate, be heated, or filtered ($100 - $350).
